Cabbie jailed three days and fined for extortion of passenger

The Magistrate’s Court today sentenced a taxi driver to three days’ jail and fined him RM2,000, in default four months’ jail, for extorting money from a male Myanmar passenger.

Magistrate Mahyudin Mohamad Som meted out the sentence to M Santharamohan, 34, and ordered that the jail sentence begin from the date of his arrest on Aug 23.

The father of one was charged with extortion by causing fear in the passenger, Kyaw Kyaw, to hand over RM170 to him at 12.30pm on Aug 10.

Kyaw Kyaw, who worked as a cook, had hailed the taxi at Kota Raya and, upon arriving at Dataran Merdeka, Santharamohan stopped the vehicle by the roadside and frightened the Myanmar national by saying, “Do you want to go to the police station or the Immigration?”

He then ordered Kyaw Kyaw to hand over all his money (RM170) and dropped him off at a bus stop in Sentul.

Santharamohan, who was represented by lawyer Sharen Rosli, appealed for leniency, saying he had to take care of his wife who was six months pregnant, as well as his mother.

DPP Nur Farah Adilah Noordin appeared for the prosecution.
