Gen Y lacks appreciation for independence day, says Merdeka baby

A Merdeka baby says Generation Y should not be complacent or ashamed of flying the Jalur Gemilang.

"We ought to be proud of our flag because it is our national symbol," said Merdeka Osman who was born on Aug 31, 1957, about 15 minutes after the Malayan Federation flag was raised to replace the Union Jack.

Expressing his concern about the waning enthusiasm among the young generation to commemorate and appreciate the significance of Merdeka Day, he said the government must tackle the negative development smartly.

"The era change and time have caused the spirit of independence to diminish, particularly among the Gen Y to the extent that they do not respect the national flag.

"We should appreciate the sacrifice made by our national fighters to secure independence for us. The least we can do is to fly the Jalur Gemilang and strengthen our unity," he told Bernama.

The former civil servant was met while celebrating his birthday at his house in Kampung Baroh, Santan in Kangar yesterday.

Merdeka said the Jalur Gemilang would constantly be flying high at his residence as testimony of his appreciation for the independence achieved by the nation.

"The further one generation moves away from independence day, the further will the spirit and appreciation for it deteriorate," he said.
