Najib on the way out, say pundits; Tan Sri remanded in MACC probe

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Najib on the way out, say pundits

Centre for Policy Initiatives CEO Lim Teck Ghee believes that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is on his way out, planning to make a quick and possibly clean exit now that he has been cleared of culpability in the 1MDB scandal by local enforcement and regulatory agencies whose chiefs were coincidentally recently replaced.

Another observer finds this to be likely as there are signs that snap polls is on the way soon, with Najib likely to leave office and BN attempting to rid of its tattered image and trying to retain its grip on power.

Tan Sri remanded in MACC probe

The Malaysian-Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a seven-day remand order on the Tan Sri, who is the chairperson of a government-linked bank, from the Magistrate's Court in Putrajaya.

However, former Umno leader Khairuddin Abu Hassan has blasted the MACC for its ongoing anti-graft blitz that saw senior government officials snagged, but it seems to be ignoring the more prominent 1MDB scandal which is the subject of global investigations.

More Kinibites

The Court of Appeal has ordered the home minister and the ministry's secretary-general to pay damages for the suspension order issued against The Edge Communications Sdn Bhd from July 23 to Sept 21 last year for publishing a series of articles on the 1MDB scandal.

Federal Territories PAS lodged a police report against the organisers of the Aiyoh Wat Lah! Awards, describing the awards as "a rude and uncivilised action in order to get cheap publicity".

Lembah Pantai parliamentarian Nurul Izzah Anwar has questioned the Education Ministry's refusal to act on an alleged sexual abuse case involving a private religious school in Perak.

Axed PAS vice-president Husam Musa has officially submitted his membership form to the Amanah leadership during a pre-Merdeka dinner in Cyberjaya last night, saying that Amanah is the new vessel for Islamic struggle as PAS is like a rudderless ship, going nowhere.

Looking ahead

Today is Merdeka Day, the day that the Federation of Malaya, precursor to the Federation of Malaysia which only came into being in 1963, won its independence from the British and gained its right to self-determination in 1957.

Malaysiakini wishes all its readers and supporters happy Merdeka.
