Opposition counts potential losses; Dr M meets Agong; Haron Din dies

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Opposition see potential casualties after redelineation

The opposition examined the possible losses they may suffer if the Election Commission's redelineation exercise goes through.

Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong pointed out that Pagoh MP Muhyiddin Yassin's constituency size was dramatically reduced, which he claimed may be aimed at defeating the former Umno leader.

Meanwhile, Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng pointed out that police voters have been moved out of his constituency - a DAP stronghold - into PKR's Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar's constituency, which is a marginal seat.

PKR's Sri Andalas state assemblyperson Dr Xavier Jeyakumar claimed the EC transformed his seat from a racially-mixed one to a Malay seat.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang questioned why the EC did not fulfil its previous promise to ensure that every parliamentary seat will not have more than 100,000 voters.

Mahathir finally meets Agong

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has finally met with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and presented the Citizens' Declaration petition calling for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's removal.

The Economist noted that Mahathir now appears to be on the side of the opposition, but questioned whether he was prepared to go all the way to topple Umno - or may eventually return to its fold.

Meanwhile, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail urged youths to register as voters in anticipation of a general election, which some observers say will be held as early as March next year.

Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said BN should not take lightly the possibility of the fractious opposition succeeding in brokering a deal to take on the ruling coalition one-on-one in the general election.

PAS spiritual leader passes on

PAS spiritul leader Haron Din passed away while seeking medical treatment in the United States.

He was expected to be laid to rest in the US according to Muslim customs to bury the dead as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak described Haron's death as a great loss to the country.

Other Kini bites

PKR lawyer Latheefa Koya criticised Umno for attacking jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's US lawyer.

Wan Roslan Wan Hamat, political secretary to the Kelantan menteri besar, confirmed that state employees were checked on to ensure they do not join the new PAS splinter political party, Parti Amanah Negara.

Siti Noor Radiah Ismail said the bronze medal she won in the long jump T20 event at the Rio Paralympics was a gift for Malaysia.

Looking ahead

Top opposition leaders are set to attend the Kongres Mahasiswa Keadilan in Ampang.

Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos will be lodging a police report against Bersih for planning a rally on Nov 19.
