Ex-AG breaks silence

Abdul Gani Patail finally broke silence on his removal as attorney-general, stating that anyone in the position could be removed "at the whim" of the prime minister.*

Meanwhile, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said, after the 1MDB scandal, he now believed that the prime minister should not be the finance minister, even though he first started the tradition.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak criticised Mahathir's apparent change of stance, describing it as a case of double standards and speaking with a forked tongue.

Umno splinters begin to move

Umno splinter parties have begun to mobilise, with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) recruiting 110 former Selangor Umno leaders.

Bersatu vice-president Mukhriz Mahathir said if his party comes into power, the prime minister's position will be imposed with a two-term limit.

He also proposed that the opposition unite under a common logo for the next general election.

Meanwhile, a yet-to-be-named Umno splinter party in Sabah led by former Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal is in the works, but Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the BN has no problem fighting them off.

Penampang MP Darell Leiking, who quit PKR to join Shafie's party, denied paying or receiving RM5 million to quit his old party.

IGP vows to stop clash between Bersih and red shirts

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar denied double standards in dealing with Gerakan Merah leader Mohamad Ali Baharom who had threatened to harm Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, pointing out that police had already arrested him.

Khalid also pledged to prevent a clash between the Bersih 5 protesters and red shirts protesters during the rallies which are set to take place on Nov 19.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said BN, including Umno, also have some disagreements over the Election Commission's redelineation plans.

MCA president Liow Tiong Lai told the BN supreme council not to allow PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's private members bill to go to the floor when Parliament convenes next month.

Unesco director-general Irina Bokova described the prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor's early childhood programme initiative Permata as an outstanding example.
