Political vendetta against Guan Eng or corruption? Let evidence decide

YOURSAY | 'Let's see the proof when the case comes up, and then make judgment.'

Thank you for believing I’m not corrupt, Guan Eng tells supporters

SteveOh: No one should doubt that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is innocent of the charge. Let's hope he has learnt the simple lesson in the adage that 'discretion is the better part of valour.'

Public figures must act not only beyond blame, but must be seen to be beyond blame and suspicion.

They are fair game to their opponents waiting for an excuse to pounce. Guan Eng's accusers are clinging to straws, and their aim is that some of the mud will stick. There are no grounds for a case, let alone a conviction.

On hindsight, Guan Eng would have been better off postponing the purchase of the property until he had left office. But buying property is not a crime, and people buy and sell properties above or below market expectations all the time, and I have done both myself.

Guan Eng was and still is, a victim of a political vendetta - that's why he is victimised. People are hopeful a fair judge will decide Guan Eng's innocence, hence, the huge support for him.

Progressive: Guan Eng has done a splendid job in administering Penang. He has sacrificed immensely for the cause of all Malaysians. Malaysians are proud and indebted to him. Thanks, Guan Eng.

But we need to wait till Sept 30 to see the charges and subsequently to see the evidence against him. The case can be politically motivated - but if the evidence is clear-cut, then we have to make a conclusion from there.

Shouting slogans and making speeches do not make for integrity. Let's wait and see. We need to call a spade a spade, however painful it may be.

Cogito Ergo Sum: Fifty years of struggle all up in smoke because, in your naïveté, you tried to get a good personal deal. In public office, especially for opposition leaders, you have to be impeccably clean because the vultures are waiting to pounce on you.

You may be clean, sir, but ignorant in politicking. It would be a very, very forgiving judge who does not send you to jail.

The Reaper: You may not be corrupt, but your actions created an opening for BN to whack you. One thing for sure, you are arrogant and stubborn, and that will be your downfall.

Anonymous_1371455474: Three thousand people attending and they only collected RM12,000. DAP should ask PAS for help in collecting money. Even a half-past six ceramah by Hadi Awang can raise RM30,000 on a rainy night.

Hope it is not a sign that the mouth shouts we believe you are not guilty, but the pocket says you are guilty as hell.

Awang Top: When the going gets tough, the tough and clean will get going.

Responsible Malaysian: You are competing with the ones who are playing unfair games all the while and yet you insist on fighting on. Well done. For most other parties, they would just keep quiet or join the devils to share the bread, instead of fighting on. Another salute to you.

Worldly Wise: The judge should not have imposed a RM1,000,000 bail. He 'acquitted' Guan Eng when he did that. The public perception is that Guan Eng will not get a fair trial.

The Analyser: It's not only the personalities in politics who should appear to be squeaky clean. It's the whole party and more, especially when they are in government.

This has not happened. The incompetence, corruption and opacity, which have been so often criticised in the BN government, have been repeated over and over by the opposition when in government.

I put it down to the fact that they are not really genuine in their desire to 'Save Malaysia'. The vast majority of politicians are in the game of politics for their own personal benefit. That's Malaysian selfishness for you.

To any thinking person, the complete lack of any vision or planning shouts to the world that our politicians are not interested in Malaysians, nor Malaysia.

They are interested in themselves. For such a highly religious society, the lack of principles is appalling. But, if you look at the cycle, religion/insecurity/selfishness, then the whole situation becomes clear.

So much for the generosity of the Chinese. RM4 per head sure was some sacrifice. Still they probably realise by now that DAP is not worth supporting.

Of the 3,00 who came, 1,000 would have been there to be seen, another 1,000 to see who is there to be seen, and the final 1,000 would be the true supporters of the new messiah.

After all, what is there to support, apart from the Lims, Chineseness and Christianity? Not a great formula for running a multicultural nation, I think.

I wonder how many of the minions were peeing themselves trying not to laugh when they heard this; "Fifty years of resistance, borne out of hope and idealism, 50 years of suffering, 50 years of struggle and 50 years of faith."

Fair&Just: Wrong is wrong. The intention to deal corruptly may not be there, but succumbing to cheap greed, or to those influenced by cheap greed, is still wrong. You cannot buy cheaper when you are still chief minister. If Umno does not follow the law, it does not mean DAP should not follow the law, too.

Anticonmen: Only kleptocrats find Guan Eng a threat or arrogant. Democrats do not.

Voice :You pay for the dinner and yet you make further cash donations during the dinner. This is how DAP raises funds. But BN parties never do all this and yet they can still afford to spend lavishly during elections. So, where does BN get its funds? This is always kept secret.

Clever voter: Guan Eng is not a corrupt politician but he lacks the killer instinct required of a competent political administrator.

He relies too much on a few people, and he must accept he is not the opposition, but is running the affairs of the state. He should realise his political enemies have much bigger machinery and resources.

The question asked of him is why must he invest in a house when he could have been just a tenant and what made him so sure his so-called business friends would not betray him?

Like others, his wife should have known better. In the final analysis, he need to know all these, as well as when to keep his mouth shut. He is not a Mahathir.

Watan: Don't claim innocence, prove yourself clean in court.
