Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid says her father may not be an eloquent man, but he is someone who speaks up for what he believes in.

She said this after her father, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was ridiculed on social media for his performance in delivering his speech, in the English language, to the United Nations General Assembly last Saturday.

"He has no 'classy tongue' to impress the classy mat salleh Malaysians.

"But for me, he is a classy man who is brave enough to speak and stand for what he believes in and delivers his very best as deputy to his prime minister," Nurulhidayah said in an Instagram post yesterday.

Ultimately, she said, this was what that mattered.

A number of netizens made fun of Zahid's speech, saying he as he could not properly pronounce some words.

However, several others, including Perlis Mufti Asri Zainul Abidin, came to come to Zahid’s defence, stating that there were other criteria that were more important to look for in a leader and that the deputy prime minister had made an effort to speak in English.

Unlike Najib, who received his education at St John's Institution and later studied in England, Zahid's early education was not in elite institutions.

He studied in SK Sungai Balai and later at SM Agama Izuddin Shah and SMK Tengku Ampuan Rahimah.
