Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad is only working with his former deputy Anwar Ibrahim because they are both against the National Security Council (NSC) Act, opined Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

"He will do anything, but he did not apologise for what he did to Anwar.

"He only went to meet Anwar to voice his support for what Anwar was doing, as he didn't agree to the government's new law (regarding) the NSC," Razaleigh said in an interview with Sinar Harian today.

He said this when asked for his thoughts about the historic meeting between Mahathir and Anwar at the High Court in Kualu Lumpur earlier this month, 18 years after the former axed the latter as deputy premier.

Asked whether Mahathir could forgive Anwar, Razaleigh replied: "That I am not sure. I have not thought that far."

Razaleigh himself questioned the need for the NSC Act, which he said gave the government the "dictatorial powers". He was referring to provisions which allow the government to declare security zones, and for security forces to carry out arrests without warrants.

However since it's already law, he said discussions on it were purely academic.

Meanwhile on the 1MDB issue, he said the scandal should have gone to court.

"If there is no resolution at the court level through the laws, then we can't make any decisions.

"I agree that all those involved in the 1MDB case be brought to justice, but as long as there is no action in Malaysia or in other countries, how can we hope for a resolution?" he asked.

However he noted that the ongoing civil suit in the US involving 1MDB is following due process.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) had in July filed civil suits to seize more than US$1 billion in assets allegedly purchased with stolen 1MDB money.

The DOJ believes that in total, US$3.5 billion had been siphoned from the state investment firm.
