EC under fire over voter registration

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua accused the Election Commission of deliberately making it hard for citizens to register as voters.

Electoral reform group Bersih proposed a blanket solution where all citizens should be automatically registered as voters before the 14th general election.

Meanwhile, Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli submitted a private member's bill to amend the constitution to remove the EC's redelineation powers.

Gov't strikes back at Dr M

Government leaders struck back at former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad after he described Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's supporters as "little Goebbels".

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said this was ironic as Mahathir was described as "Hitler" when he was prime minister.

Umno's Gua Musang MP also dismissed the apparent new alliance between Mahathir and jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, pointing out that Mahathir was still refusing to apologise for having the latter jailed in the late 1990s.

Meanwhile, PAS took a veiled swipe at PKR, saying the seat tussles for GE14 were due to “parties which did not have grassroots machinery insisting to contest”.

Clampdown on social media intensifies

Despatch rider Rosmin Mohamed Nor, 40, claimed trial at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for a Facebook post deemed insulting to inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.

Meanwhile, former journalist Sidek Kamiso was arrested again, this time for a tweet that supposedly insulted Islam. He was subsequently released on bail.

In another development, the body of Azri Mohamed arrived at the Kota Bharu hospital for a second postmortem after he died in police custody.

Universiti Malaya denied awarding an honorary doctorate to celebrity marketing coach Azizan Osman, who had claimed otherwise.

International Trade and Industry Ministry II Ong Ka Chuan blamed “complaining” Malaysians for the country's slide in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) 2016-2017 to 25th position, down seven places.

Malacca Public Works director Khalid Omar was charged with 16 counts of corruption and money laundering involving RM1.28 million. He pleaded not guilty.
