For Najib, it’s ‘do as I say, and not as I do’

YOURSAY | ‘I, for one, would never eat in a restaurant which has a door…’

PM tells M'sians to spend less on food, cites nasi lemak anak dara

Anonymous #13114320: I think people are already making gastronomical changes without PM Najib Razak reminding us, especially when one’s household income shrunk.

What we need to do is to strengthen our ringgit. Without this, everything else will be expensive, especially after the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

We have to tighten our belts, yet our ministers are spending lavishly.

Flabbergasted Malaysian: Well, now that Najib advises Malaysians to spend less and be more thrifty, let's see his allocation for his PM’s Department.

Will his ministers take a huge pay cut and suffer together with the rakyat? Is he able to be a role model, or is he merely saying "do as I say, and not as I do"?

Anonymous_1371563774: With this advice, he has virtually tried to kill consumer spending and the service industries.

Eventually, cinemas and restaurants are only for the affluent and the rich... the pathetic rakyat ‘dicapatikan’ once again.

The Analyser: I think the PM needs to get out more and meet real Malaysians. I, for one, would never eat in a restaurant which has a door, because doors mean expensive and don’t necessarily mean quality.

On the whole, Malaysian food is not as classy as Malaysians would like to think. Home cooking is much better and much cheaper.

P Dev Anand Pillai: Perhaps Najib should be the first to lead by example and take a look at all the invoices and bills for the parties and celebrations that he has had since he came to power?

Has he tightened the belt? A good leader leads by example. A bad one keeps finding excuses and blames others.

Anonymous_1419577444: How much less can the rakyat spend when they already have nothing much to spend? Eat tree barks?

Ghostwhowalks: Something is seriously not right. Didn't the PM just say Malaysian had achieved 'upper-medium income' bracket?

Why is it then he suggests we tighten our belt and spend less on food when we are supposed to have more monies from the additional income to spend?

Takung: We as a nation spent so much money on Siti Hajjar Ahmad's education to become an engineer, and she ends up selling nasi lemak.

I have nothing against selling nasi lemak. It’s an honest living, but isn't she under-employed? Couldn't her engineering education be put to better use?

Have our government policies failed her and our country?

One Malaysia: This is totally arrogant coming for someone whose wife spends millions a year on Birkin bags and diamond rings and allegedly RM1,200 per week on her hairdo.

And where do all the millions come from? Donations?

Inworldnotof: Tell PM’s wife Rosmah Mansor to sell all her Birkins and precious stones, and return the money to the public coffers. Ban her from further jet-shopping that costs hundreds of millions of taxpayers' monies.

And as for you, Najib, return all the money that you have allegedly stolen.

Roar For Truth: The PM’s advice to Malaysians on how to cope with the shrinking value of the ringgit – “I eat Wagyu beef, you eat nasi lemak. My wife buys Birkin, you buy Bonia.”

Salient points of Budget 2017

Flabbergasted Malaysian: Can't Najib just do away with the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) and use the money for real development of the nation?

BR1M is short-term and does not serve any purpose in the first place. No one really gets much benefit from it. Whereas if the money goes to where it is needed, a lot can be done for the rakyat.

Kneazle: We are an upper middle-income nation, yet half of our workforce qualify for BRIM.

Mosquitobrain: I dread to imagine how and where Najib will source the funds for all the allocations in Budget 2017. We're already running on a deficit.

As always, Najib will take the easy way out. Place the burden on the people and take away subsidies to increase the government's coffers.

The first casualty is cooking oil starting in November. So folks, just cross your fingers, hold your breath and brace for another round of price increase.

JD Lovrenciear: The only most productive workforce is the civil service. Hence we must give them the best, which explains the allocations this time around.

All other workers, well, you will have to sling it out yourselves and slog till you drop dead. Who cares?
