CM: Sarawak rivers polluted due to weak enforcement

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem said weak enforcement has caused the pollution in Sarawak's rivers.

"Many of our rivers are polluted due to logging and improper use which disturb the water flow. We have to address the weak enforcement," he said at the launch of National Environment Day 2016 at the Kuching waterfront today.

Also present was Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Adenan said the climate change experienced in the world causes the weather forecast to become inaccurate.

"If we care for the environment, the environment will take care of us. Many states are feeling the negative effects of climate change.

"In Sarawak, we have taken measures to mitigate the effects of climate change such as no more timber concessions and no more commercial plantations."

At the event, Adenan presented the Langkawi awards to Institute of Islamic Understanding (Ikim) director-general Prof Azizan Baharuddin (individual category) and Shah Alam City Council (organisation category).

Each received certificates signed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, a plaque and a cash prize of RM10,000.
