Petronas Dagangan Bhd has confirmed that a person died in an explosion at the Austin Perdana Petronas station in Johor Baru today.

In a statement, the company said the 3.15pm blast hit the station's natural gas vehicle (NGV) compressor facility.

The victim was an employee of Petronas Dagangan's contractor.

"We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the victim," the company said.

Based on initial findings, it said, the explosion occurred at the station's NGV compressor facility during maintenance work.

An emergency response team was immediately mobilised and was working closely with the relevant authorities.

"The incident has since been contained," the company said, adding that the cause of the explosion was still under investigation.
