The police have confirmed that a fire at a hospital and an explosion at a petrol station in Johor Baru today that resulted in seven deaths had nothing to do with terrorism.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar advised the people against making any kind of speculation on the fire at the Intensive Care Unit of the Sultanah Aminah Hospital that took six lives and the explosion at a petrol station in Taman Mount Austin where one person was killed.

"So far, there is no evidence connecting them to terrorism. So, the public should not spread false information," he told reporters after an event in Subang Jaya tonight where the Petaling Jaya Rotary Club handed over 100 wheelchairs to the Royal Malaysia Police.

Six patients in the ICU died in a fire that started just before 9am at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

Six hours later, a man died, most probably from an explosion caused by a fire at a natural gas for vehicles tank at the petrol station.

Khalid said the authorities were investigating the cause of the two incidents.

"The investigation is comprehensive ... if there are elements of sabotage, we will identify them," he said.

The Petaling Jaya Rotary Club donated the wheelchairs to the police as a token of appreciation for the service of the police force to the public.

"This contribution is proof that the Rotary Club is aware of the sacrifices of the Royal Malaysia Police. The wheelchairs will be distributed to the police contingents throughout the country depending on need," Khalid said.

At the event, the IGP was conferred the Paul Harris award, the highest accorded to an individual by Rotary International.
