Parliament gets physical; Hadi's bill deferred again; Maria in international spotlight

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Attempted attack on Parliament grounds

Supporters of Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman attempted to attack Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad on Parliament grounds.

Tajuddin confirmed that his son Firdaus was part of the group that tried to accost and manhandle Khalid.

KL police chief Amar Singh ordered Tajuddin's son and nine others to surrender in what he described as "rioting" on Parliament grounds.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the group could only enter Parliament grounds if an MP had invited them and called for action against the MP responsible.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said he viewed the incident seriously and urged respect for the institution of Parliament.

Hadi's bill deferred again

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang again tabled his private member's motion, and then deferred it following changes to his proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

MCA, MIC and Gerakan reiterated that they were opposed to Hadi's proposed amendments even though there will now be punishment limits, albeit higher ones.

A group of Muslim NGOs demonstrated in support of Hadi's motion outside Parliament and vowed to fight Muslim MPs who opposed it.

After tabling and deferring his bill, Hadi warned non-Muslim politicians not to behave like Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, popularly known as Ahok, who is facing accusations of blasphemy against Islam in Indonesia.

PAS said it will hold a mammoth rally in support of Hadi's motion.

Maria under international spotlight

The US State Department said it was troubled by Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah's detention without trial under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act.

De facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim, in a note from prison, praised Maria and warned that no one is safe from arrests.

Maria's habeas corpus application will be heard in court on Tuesday.

Maria's sister tearfully pleaded for her release, while the detained Bersih chief’s children dismissed Umno information chief Annuar Musa's claim that she was arrested due to links to the US' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Annuar refused to reveal details to back his CIA claim. Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar also refused to weigh in on Annuar's claims, asking the media to refer to Umno information chief instead.

Maria's supporters continued to hold a vigil for her for a fourth night near Dataran Merdeka.

Activist Sheila Sandhu who attacked KL police chief Amar Singh on social media over Maria's detention was arrested.

Other Kinibites

Malaysiakini takes a look at the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act in its latest edition of Kiniguide.

Prime minister's son Nizar Najib said people had nothing to fear if they had not done anything wrong in response to attacks against his father's administration.

Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia announced it will hold a mega demonstration next year in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Hindraf rally.

Bersih leader Maria's application for leave to challenge the Election Commission's redelineation exercise was dismissed.

Selangor exco member Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad defended the state government’s role in organising ‘The Thoughts of Anwar Ibrahim’ seminar.

Looking ahead

There will be a demonstration outside the Myanmar embassy after Friday prayers to protest the killings of ethnic Rohingya.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will try to strike out attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali's attempt to cite him for contempt at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Maria Chin's supporters will formally launch the Bebas Maria campaign at Petaling Jaya Library tonight.
