The race fig leaf Najib hopes will cover 1MDB scandal

YOURSAY | ‘ I wish they hadn’t spent all that money on that pretty useless 1Malaysia campaign.’

Najib's AGM urging a path to racial disaster, claims Saifuddin

Kim Quek: Has Najib Abdul Razak’s panic of losing his premiership risen to such a height that he must incite humankind’s primordial instincts to such an extreme?

Does that not remind us of Adolf Hitler who had succeeded in whipping up such racial hatred that millions of Jews were subsequently annihilated and many millions more of his own countrymen wiped out?

In a multiracial and multi-religious country like Malaysia where race and religion are delicately balanced, nothing can be more disastrous than reckless incitement to widen these fault lines.

Najib is plainly inflaming a fire that he couldn’t care less could engulf the country (whether through a blaze or simmering fire), as long as his position is secured. When that happens, believe me, no one - including the Malays - would be spared.

Will the Umno delegates swallow Najib’s racist message lock, stock and barrel like Hitler’s fascist supporters did, or will they exercise their independence of mind based on facts and their moral principles to navigate a saner course for their party and the country?

The masses - including the Malays - are watching.

Chipmunk: That is one of the very reason why millions of Malaysians do not recognise Najib as the PM of Malaysia.

Najib's usual style is to go along with the sentiment of the audience. To the Malays, he says “kita harus mempertahankan bangsa Melayu dan Islam”. To the Indians, he will say “nambikei” and to the Chinese it’s “Ah Jib Gor”.

The best part is that all these suckers continue to believe in him and continue to get screwed. When will they ever open their eyes? I guess as long as Najib gives them crumbs, they will fall at his feet.

Najib has set a dangerous precedent and the after-effects can be very damaging to non-Malays. His message speaks volumes on racism and he is promoting violence amongst different races and the sitting duck will be the Indians and Chinese.

I do hope that my comments will be taken as a warning to all Malaysians. Wake up, Malaysia.

Fairnsquare: Najib is holding on to power at all costs, as failure to do so will lead to calamity for him personally. This is sad but true.

There was a look of dismay and confusion among some of the senior members in the Umno AGM. When he can sack a duly elected deputy leader and vice-president of Umno and still come out unfazed, his political skills are indeed unnerving. As a result, nobody within Umno dare to question him.

Do the rakyat trust a PM who has not explained the 1MDB fiasco with a potential loss of RM42 billion and causing the plunge of the ringgit?

Have the rakyat absolved the Umno Wanita leader who was allegedly involved in the RM250 million National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) debacle implicating her husband?

Or are the delegates afraid to speak out as their fate could end up like Muhyiddin Yassin and Shafie Apdal, or even Dr Mahathir Mohamad?

Basically: Nothing new, but I wish they hadn’t spent all that money on that pretty useless 1Malaysia campaign. Can I have my money back please?

And tell government receptionists to stop using the Salam 1Malaysia greeting, because it's pretty irritating. A simple “Hello” would be more sincere.

AJ: It's a thick smokescreen he is creating by putting race and religion in front of his alleged misdeeds. And the fear he may be the one blamed for the continuing decline of Umno’s popularity.

He can't take a statesman's position but a "whatever works" position. His biggest concern is keeping out of jail rather than leading a multiracial country.

Hardboiled: I would dare say that many Malaysians may not recognise Malaysia any more. Even though we had our differences and preferences in the past, we always felt proud to be Malaysian.

The relatively recent escalation of racial and religious undertones has made us not lose the pride but divert it towards our own individual relations and beliefs over those of the nation’s.

What then will we become? A country that will never rise to a greater plateau of prosperity. We become an island that is good to visit and live in perhaps, but not one to invest in and pledge allegiance to.

Anonymous #70881335: Malays, and Malaysians in general, must think, now more than ever, that Malaysia is more important than one man or party.

New Dawn: A hungry man knows no racial divide, he only knows food. Eventually, all Malaysians will be guided by their economic well-being.

While others talk about race, Pakatan should highlight how it plans to serve the economic and social interests of the voters instead of squabbling among themselves over petty issues, over personal political ambitions and refusing to see reality by still going on bended knees to convince PAS to come on board.

Tony Soprano: I think if I were Najib, I'd appoint a loyal successor (come on, we all know about elections in Malaysia) and quit while I'm ahead.

Retire to a nice villa in Dubai where the authorities won't agree to any extradition requests and madam can find plenty of expensive handbags.

Clever Voter: A desperate man indeed, Najib has no choice but to run to the grassroots. He probably doesn't believe what he has said, and to be fair he is not racist but he uses the race card as this has been tried before.

We have heard and seen at successive Umno AGMs rhetorical speeches arousing the members and what happened next? More scandals.

Politics is like a double-edged sword. Ultimately the public loses, and there is no winner.
