Myanmar to file official complaint to Putrajaya

Myanmar said it will send an official complaint to the Malaysian government on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's attendance at a Kuala Lumpur rally condemning violence against the Rohingya community.

A demonstration was held in the Myanmar capital against Najib while Myamar independent news website The Irrawaddy published a cartoon of Najib accusing him of using the Rohingya issue as "misdirection" from domestic affairs.

Head of Opposition Leader's Office Malek Husin said the government can cut diplomatic ties with Myanmar and support the Rohingya refugees, if it is serious. However, even motions in Parliament to condemn the violence against Rohingyas have been rejected.

UN Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai said while the government's stance against violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state is commendable, it should also address domestic concerns, such as the arrest of Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah under security laws.

Saudi prince funding not dangerous?

UN representative Kiai also said there should not be double standard on foreign funding, with political donations from Saudi princes being allowed but funding by Open Society Foundations is deemed dangerous.

In a special lecture in Kuala Lumpur, he also said police should remove violent protesters and safeguard the right of peaceful citizens to assemble.

Cabinet minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said PM Najib offered former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former minister Mohd Shafie Apdal to resign honourably, but the duo refused, leaving Najib with no choice but to sack them from cabinet.
