Langkawi hospital cafe closes after fly infestation

The Langkawi Hospital cafeteria has been instructed to close for two weeks due to an infestation of flies.

According to Star Online, the closure follows spot checks by the district health department yesterday at the cafeteria operating in the 100-year-old hospital.

The hospital's visitor board deputy chairperson Chen Liau Wen confirmed the closure.

He said visitors have been complaining about poor hygiene despite warnings issued by the board.

"Flies could be seen sitting on the displayed food at the self-service zone, tables were not cleaned up and used plates not collected," Chen said.

Chen, who is also Langkawi MCA division chairperson, added that the cafeteria was also dirty.

He said the hospital board discussed the condition three months ago, but it could not terminate the operator's contract as it had yet to expire.

Chen said the operator will be required to clean the premises and its surrounding areas during the two week period.

He warned of stern action including terminating the operator's contract if it failed to comply.
