An MCA leader said his party president Liow Tiong Lai is expected to meet Prime Minister Najib Razak over the contentious issue of government non-recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

This follows the reemergence of the issue of at the Umno general assembly last week, where one delegate criticised the independent Chinese schools' certificate.

According to The Star, Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon previously discussions had been held with the Higher Education Ministry and parties such as the United School Committees Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong).

“Both the ministry and Dong Zong have put forward their suggestions on how to make things work.

“So we must find a common ground of consensus that can be agreed by both to avoid any discrepancy,” he was reported today saying after an event.

However he did not provide details of the meeting or when it would take place.

Seven months ago the government was reported saying the matter is still being discussed.

Recognised abroad but …

Chinese education proponents have been fighting for years to get the UEC recognised by the government so that its graduates can enter public universities.

Putrajaya does not recognise the UEC as its curriculum doesn't follow the national education curriculum and UEC students allegedly lack proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia.

It is therefore accepted by top universities across the world, but not by local public universities.

At MCA’s 63rd annual general meeting last month, Najib promised to address the issues related to Chinese schools but did not elaborate, except to say he would "work with MCA to increase the number of Chinese schools".
