Bus crash inaction; Rafizi takes on Felda; Guan Eng grinch

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

No action after 2013 bus crash report

DAP's Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong urged a royal commission of inquiry to be held on long-distance buses after a bus crash in Pagoh, Johor, on Christmas Eve killed 14 people.

This is because none of the 51 recommendations in the 2013 report, made after the fatal Genting bus crash, have been implemented, Liew said.

Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) chief Syed Hamid Albar proposed long-distance bus operators be allowed to raise fares so they can pay drivers a higher basic salary and discourage drivers from chasing commissions by making back-to-back trips with little rest.

Zakeer Zubir, 32, who drove the bus that crashed in Pagoh, reportedly only had three hours' sleep before starting the Penang-Johor Baru trip.

His family said the bus operator has yet to offer aid, including paying for the medical treatment of Zakeer’s widow, who was injured in the crash.

Police are investigating the crash while the preliminary report by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research is expected in two weeks.

Rafizi takes on Felda

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said the Federal Land Development Authority’s (Felda) deal to buy a 37 percent stake in Indonesian firm PT Eagle High Plantations Tbk would help him make inroads into the Felda settlements to topple BN in the next general election.

However, Felda, gave its assurance to the settlers that the deal would not adversely affect their well-being.

Guan Eng accused of marring Christmas spirit

MCA president Liow Tiong Lai said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng brought negativity to the Christmas season through his festive message, which touched on the erosion of democratic rights.

However, DAP's Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong questioned why issues of justice should not be raised during Christmas.

Other Kinibites

Umno ministers Salleh Said Keruak, Abdul Rahman Dahlan and Khairy Jamaluddin slammed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for claiming that Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia is bribery, stating that cash transfers to the rakyat are a globally-acceptable economic policy.

Putrajaya makes 19 requests to 35 Facebook users up to June this year, more than the entire year last year.

Looking forward

Rafizi will hold a press conference on the Felda-Eagle High deal.

The four Universiti Malaya student activists are challenging the disciplinary action taken against them in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.
