Eleven schools in two districts, namely Hulu Terengganu and Setiu, will be closed tomorrow due to floods.

State Education Department director, Shafruddin Ali Hussin said the temporary closure involved 10 primary schools and one secondary school.

"In Setiu, the three schools involved are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Fikri, SK Kampung Las and SK Kampung Besut.

"The seven affected primary schools in Hulu Terengganu are SK Tengkawang, SK Kuala Ping, SK Kuala Jenderis, SK Padang Setebu, SK Matang, SK Bukit Tadok and SK Getang while the secondary school involved is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Jenderis," he said when contacted by Bernama, today.

The postponement of the new school session involves 1,159 primary school pupils and 180 teachers, and 273 secondary school students and 37 teachers, he said.

The first day of school in 2017 in 25 schools this morning had to be postponed as these schools or their access roads were flooded.

In JELI, two ailing senior citizens are among 239 flood evacuees currently taking shelter at the relief centre at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Ayer Lanas here.

Che Idris Che Muhamood, 90, who is suffering of old age condition, and Annuar Husien, 60, who is suffering from stroke, were evacuated after their houses in Kampung Ayer Lanas were inundated by floodwaters yesterday morning.

"My husband and one of my children had to take turns to carry my father as he could no longer walk, besides being visually impaired, since five years ago.

"We have to evacuate after the floodwater rose to knee high at 1 pm yesterday before raising to waist high in late afternoon," Che Idris's daughter, Che Minah, 40, told reporters at the relief centre today.

Meanwhile, Annuar's wife, Halimah Ahmad, 55, said she and her 25-year-old son faced the same situation as they had to carry her husband for about 500 metres before reaching the relief centre.

"This is the second time we had to be evacuated to the relief centre after the massive flood in 2014. I'm more prepared this time around," she said.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim and Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub spent more than an hour visiting the victims from 56 families at the relief centre.
