If growth strong, why is the ringgit sliding fast?

YOURSAY | ‘My finance minister says the bigger the number, the better it is.’

Ringgit slides to new low of RM4.50 against US$ since 1998

SusahKes: Phew, it finally reached RM4.50 to the US dollar after keeping us in suspense long enough.

Now, that is another feather in the cap for Malaysian Official 1 (MO1), isn't it? He has boldly gone where even Dr Mahathir Mohamad dared not venture, and that is, to allow the rate to drop to 4.50. Surely MO1 ought to trump this up when he presents his report card prior to the next GE.

In times like this, I'm reminded of the James Bond theme song, ‘Nobody Does It Better’. With so many scandals during his tenure, the fact that MO1 could still beam us a smile from the golfing ranges in Australia while travelling on a government jet, you have to admit - nobody does it better.

Kangkung: Don't worry, there will be many more ‘new record lows’ to come. By the end of 2017, it will probably be RM5.00 against the US dollar.

With an alleged kleptocrat who is said to have siphoned billions from the country's coffers, the ringgit is now not worth the paper it is printed on.

RM2.6 Billion Turkey Haram: PM Najib Abdul Razak said that the West is envious of our stunning growth of 4.5 percent. So how come, despite the strong growth, the ringgit is sliding so fast?

Najib, they do not envy the growth of the economy. They are in fact envious of you for the simple reason that in spite of the country's ringgit is losing so much ground against most of the world's currencies, you can still ‘sha la la’ like a clown, and travel in style to Australia for a holiday at the expense of the people's money.

A truly responsible leader, with conscience, would not do just that.

Lajib: Why have no ministers opened their mouths to suggest how to strengthen the ringgit?

We have a minister who proposed to take stern action against former government servants for criticising the government of the day.

So, the currency issue is not important?

Caripasal: Why are you all complaining? I think BN is doing a good job. It is now RM4.50 to US$1, compared to RM2.7 previously.

My finance minister says the bigger the number, the better it is. He surely knows his math.

Just a Malaysian: Inflation will hit us hard. Rural folks will suffer more. Our leaders are still busy playing racial politics?

Gaji Buta: It’s interesting to read everyone is so concerned about rural folks. I think the worst hit will be the middle class, who depend on imported stuff or products from imported raw materials. The kampung folks will do just fine.

Financial Times: GE14 in 3rd quarter of 2017, Najib to win

Anonymous 2410591459862040: The headline should be ‘Financial Times: GE14 in 3rd quarter of 2017, Najib to win and rakyat are screwed’. How can BN win when the country’s outlook is dismal?

Well Thats Fantastic: I have faith that many more people will vote against corruption, only the rakyat can say who is the winner.

Many have opened their eyes to see that Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) is a pittance for their vote, while they are kept poor through new taxes and subsidy cuts. Only those who are in bed with the alleged crooks will vote for them.

Tenfold: BN or rather Umno will win, by hook or by crook. Umno will be ‘buying’ the elections, allegedly ably aided by the government agencies under their control.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be looking the other way. There is no way the opposition will be able to make it to Putrajaya, not the way the whole system is twisted by postal votes and the vote-rigging in Sabah and Sarawak.

Even if in spite of all that and by some miracle the opposition wins, there is always the National Security Council Act to declare an emergency.

Anonymous 2413201460529218: One week is a long time in politics. There will be many twists and turns before GE14. No one can accurately predict its outcome.

Gaji Buta: Najib has both the allegedly corrupt and ‘religious’ Malays in his pocket, leaving only Malays who want openness, integrity and accountability - a total of 26 (the Group of 25 (G25) plus Zaid Ibrahim and some ex-Umno people) against him. So, it’s a no-brainer BN will win again.

Chefoo: A research study on 1,000 people represents the whole country? The validity and reliability of this survey is skewed. Anyway, let the BN be happy till the third quarter then.

Ash Burn: Yes, what did these crystal ball-gazers say about Brexit before the votes were in?

Spinning: BN will win, and will win big. Votes are easily bought in Malaysia. Phantom voters are plentiful.

There is no capable opposition, and the best person to lead it is behind bars. Our beloved PM cannot lose this election due to all the "scandals" surrounding 1MDB.

Only if he remains in power, can he "stop" all investigations in Malaysia against 1MDB, SRC and any others.

Gaji Buta: The opposition is not an alien entity. It is formed by us and represents us. If it is dysfunctional, then it is our fault for not forming a better opposition.

If the opposition is seen as a third person, then they do not represent us.
