Dr M gets royal rebuke; 'Rosmah didn’t sign as Eric Tan'

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Royal rebuke for Dr Mahathir

Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar lambasted Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his criticism of China’s investment in Johor’s Forest City project.

Mahathir “deeply offended and hurt” the sultan when he said Johor was surrendering land to the Chinese, the monarch said.

On a related matter, Padang Serai MP N Surendran said Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was wrong to try to emulate China’s crime-busting measures, given the republic’s poor human rights record.

Meanwhile, Umno information chief Annuar Musa said he is not interested in suing those who accused him of corruption, including Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim.

'Rosmah didn’t sign cheques as Eric Tan'

Prime minister’s wife Rosmah Mansor's lawyer refuted claims that Rosmah signed cheques using the monicker ‘Eric Tan’.

The speculation online came after a Singapore court heard that the often mentioned ‘Eric Tan Kim Loon’ is an alias for 1MDB-linked Penang-born businessman Jho Low.

The lawyer, Noor Hajran Mohd Noor, also said a photograph of Rosmah shopping in Perth circulating in the Internet showed her with friends, not her maids.

Other Kinibites

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad said none of those who ambushed him on Parliament grounds last year were in the police identification parade.

A ‘Datuk Seri’ caught on camera assaulting a security guard with a bolt cutter, over a parking dispute, surrendered himself to police.

CIMB chairperson Nazir Abdul Razak, who is also the prime minister’s brother, said a National Consultative Council is needed due to a trust deficit following the 1MDB scandal.

Federal Land Development Agency (Felda) chairperson Shahrir Samad dismissed PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli’s allegation that the Felda would lose RM7.8 billion if it delists Felda Global Ventures, saying it is “not proper math”.

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali instructed an executive council member to explain the 20 sen charge for plastic bags in the state, after public outcry.

Tremors were felt in various parts of Peninsular Malaysia after an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit near Medan, Indonesia.

Looking ahead

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli will hold his previously postponed press conference on Felda, likely taking on Shahrir’s insult on his mathematics skills.
