Maritime agency evacuates sick German woman from cruise ship

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) mounted a medical evacuation (Medivac) mission for a German woman who fell sick on board a cruise ship bound for Thailand today.

The MMEA helped to ferry Vikkie Clotylde Alidangela, 68, a passenger on German cruise ship Mein Schiff, to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu.

MMEA Eastern Region Maritime director First Admiral Mamu Said Alee said the agency received an emergency call from the captain of the cruise ship at 9.30am.

"At that time, the ship was sailing about five nautical miles off Kuala Terengganu.

"Following the call, we deployed a ship and a patrol boat to the location to transfer the patient so that she could seek treatment at the hospital.

"Rough seas and strong winds were a hindrance to the transfer process but everything went well," he said in a statement.

Mamu Said said the MMEA ship carrying Alidangela arrived at its Terengganu DM9 jetty at 2.30pm before she was taken to the hospital.

This was the first Medivac case in the eastern maritime region this year, he added.
