Harapan to protest US Muslim ban; PAS to ensure Muslim leadership

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Harapan to protest US Muslim ban

Pakatan Harapan chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah has urged a demonstration against the United States President Donald Trump's executive order to ban citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia from entering the US. The order also bars entry for Syrian refugees.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's silence on this matter is questioned, in light of his strong pro-Rohingya statetments that led to a diplomatic row with Myanmar recently.

Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also urged the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) to speak out against Trump's move.

Meanwhile, a US federal judge allows an emergency stay on the Trump's order, amid scenes of chaos in airports all over the world where US-bound travellers from affected countries are detained and turned back.

Thousands gather in airports in the US to protest the move, while German chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her disagreement with the policy.

Iran reciprocates the policy against US citizens, except those who already have Iranian visas, and said the policy is the "greatest gift" to extremists.

PAS to ensure Muslim leadership

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the party's obligation is to uphold Islam and ensure Muslim leadership in the country, something it could not do when in Pakatan Rakyat, where it received the smallest share of Parliament seats among the opposition members.

Hadi, who said PAS is targeting 40 seats in the next general election, noted that only 39 of the 89 seats won by opposition are held by Muslims, raising possibilty of non-Muslims controlling Parliament.

In a related matter, PAS information chief Nasruddin Hassan said thousands would rise to defend Hadi if DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang makes good his threat to take legal action against Hadi for calling him "anti-Islam".
