MACC probes Annuar; PAS, Umno Youth shy away from 'Muslim ban' protest

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

MACC probing Annuar Musa

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating allegations of graft and abuse of power involving Umno information chief Annuar Musa, in relation to his positions in Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara).

The MACC said it would work with the federal Internal Audit Department on this matter.

This followed Annuar's suspension as Mara chairperson by its board during an emergency meeting held at the Mara headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, though some questions on whether the board acted thus without ministerial approval were not answered.

Asked to clear the air on the matter, a Mara board member confirmed that Annuar had been suspended as Mara chairperson with immediate effect, as it was within the board's purview to do so. "We only needed to inform the minister," Nazir Hussin Akthar Hussin told Malaysiakini.

PAS and Umno Youth shy away from 'Muslim ban' protest

The Youth wings of PAS and Umno will not take part in the Pakatan Harapan-mooted protest against US President Donald Trump’s travel ban on citizens of seven Muslim countries, to be held outside the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur this Friday.

However, some argued that it is highly important that we as Malaysian citizens stand up for justice and fight discrimination, whether it is on our soil or abroad, regardless of partisan affiliations.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump fired top federal government lawyer Sally Yates after she took the extraordinarily rare step of defying the White House and refused to defend new travel restrictions targeting the seven Muslim-majority nations.
