N Korean man remanded seven days over Kim Jong-nam's assassination

The North Korean man who was arrested to assist in the investigation into the killing of Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was remanded for seven days beginning today.

Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat confirmed this when contacted and informed that the remand order was issued by the Sepang Magistrate's Court.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar was reported as saying that based on the identity card (i-KAD) in his possession, the suspect, who was detained at 9.50pm yesterday, was identified as Ri Jong-chol, a citizen of the Demoractic People's Republic of North Korea (DPRK).

Following the arrest, local and international media practitioners have been gathering at Sepang police headquarters since 8am as it was speculated that the remand proceedings would be conducted at the police building.

A car belonging to the North Korean embassy was seen entering the compound of the police headquarters about 4.15pm which intensified speculation that the people from the embassy were meeting the fourth suspect who was detained in its lock-up.

The car was seen leaving the police headquarters almost an hour later and the media practitioners failed to get any comment.

At about 6.15pm, three police vehicles were seen entering the compound and a man, who looked like a Korean, got out from one of the cars and was heavily guarded by police.

Earlier, at about 11.15am, a car belonging to the Vietnamese embassy was seen entering the police headquarters and left about 20 minutes later.

On Thursday, the remand proceedings involving two foreign women including a Vietnamese were conducted at the district police headquarters.

Jong-nam, the elder half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was reportedly at KLIA2 at 8am to board a flight to Macau and one hour later a woman suddenly covered his face with a cloth laced with poison.

Jong-nam, who had used the name Kim Chol, reportedly died on the way to the Putrajaya Hospital.
