Rohingya food flotilla vessel to return tomorrow

After delivering 2,300 tonnes of food and daily essentials to the ethnic Rohingya community in Myanmar and Bangladesh, the food flotilla Nautical Aliya vessel is expected to return to Port Klang tomorrow.

The chief of the humanitarian mission, Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, said the vessel, which had called at Yangon in Myanmar and Chittagong in Bangladesh, was now in the Malacca Straits.

All the passengers and crew of the Nautical Aliya, which left Bangladesh on Feb 16, were safe and healthy, Azeez said in a statement.

He said the homecoming welcome for the more than 180 volunteers of the 'Food Flotilla for Myanmar' would be held at the Boustead Cruise Terminal in Port Klang.

Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein is expected to grace the ceremony.

The vessel left Port Klang on Feb 3 and delivered aid in Yangon on Feb 9 and Chittagong on Feb 14.

In Bangladesh, the aid was distributed to three refugee camps in Kutupalong, Cox's Bazar and Teknaf, with the assistance of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The mission, organised by the Putra 1Malaysia Club and the Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations, consisted of representatives from Malaysian and foreign non-governmental organisations, medical teams, teaching manpower and media practitioners.
