Bare-handed 'assassins'; TMJ campaigns for FAM presidency; head of forex task force named

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Bare-handed 'assassins'

The two female suspects, detained in connection with the murder of Kim Jong-nam, applied toxic substance on the deceased with their bare hands, revealed inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar, adding that the duo had practised the manoeuvre many times in locations around Kuala Lumpur.

The North Korean embassy ridiculed Khalid's ‘bare hands assassins’ assertion, asking how the two women were still alive if this was the case.

Meanwhile, the IGP said that police were seeking to question a senior official attached to the North Korean embassy to facilitate investigations into the murder, but declined to confirm if the official who held the rank of second secretary was a suspect.

TMJ campaigns for FAM presidency

Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak shared his vision to see changes to the national football team and local league.

“The prime minister knows my agenda in football, and he can see potential," he said, relating his recent meeting with the PM.

Asked about his rival former Kelantan Red Warriors boss Annuar Musa, the crown prince quipped "Oooh... I'm so scared", before promising to bring sweeping changes to FAM so that it can be more inclusive if he was made president.

Forex task force chief appointed

The cabinet appointed former chief secretary to the government Mohd Sidek Hassan to head the special task force which will carry out investigations into the losses involving foreign currency transactions by Bank Negara in the 1990s.

Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim agreed that Bank Negara's disastrous foreign exchange foray almost three decades ago should be investigated, but insisted that it should be done by a royal commission of inquiry instead of a cabinet-appointed task force.

More Kinibites

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was forced to cling on to the passenger door for over 50 minutes while travelling in a Proton Perdana rented from the Public Works Department (PWD) due to a malfunctioning door that would not close shut.

When Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor mooted to close certain roads to allow for Mat Rempit to race at night, little did the people of Taman Mastiara knew that it would be the beginning of their nightmare, as illegal racers now swarm their area at night, even after the plan fell through.

Malaysiakini's latest edition of the KiniGuide looked at how crowd sizes at political rallies have become an important yardstick of the success of the organisers and to assess support from the public, which is why there has always been contention over crowd size estimates, mostly because of vested interests.

Looking ahead

Umno Youth will lead a delegation to submit a protest note to the North Korean embassy today over the spat between Malaysia and the hermit state in the wake of the murder of King Jong-nam - the half-brother North Korean leader Kim Jong-un - at KLIA2 last Monday.
