Dr M's 'white elephant'; Jong-nam trial gag order; Johor exco on leave

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Dr M's 'white elephant'

National car maker Proton is a failed white elephant of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz. "This is what we have inherited from him... This is a white elephant project," he sniped.

He also said that Saudi Arabia's King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud would not have come to Malaysia if there was anything "shady" with the RM2.6 billion donation to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Jong-nam trial gag order

A gag order has been imposed on the police and potential witnesses from making any public statements on the Kim Jong-nam murder case, following an application by Indonesian suspect Siti Aisyah's lawyer Gooi Soon Seng at the Sepang Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Siti Aisyah, 25, and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, 28, were charged with the murder of Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, at the same court earlier.

Meanwhile South Korea urged "collective measures" to punish North Korea for using chemical weapons to kill the estranged half-brother of its leader, following the decision by Malaysian authorities to charge the duo with Jong-nam's murder.

Johor exco on leave

Johor state executive councillor Abd Latif Bandi has gone on leave following a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe on graft on an alleged land and housing scandal in the state, which falls under his purview.

A DAP assemblyperson has submitted an emergency motion to the Johor Legislature, calling for the formation of a select committee to monitor the ongoing graft probe involving abuses linked to real estate in the state.

More Kinibites

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has denied suggestions that it was absent from seat allocation talks with Pakatan Harapan Monday because it did not perform the necessary preparations.

Sugar prices are up by RM0.11 per kilogram, although there has yet to be any official announcement.

Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) chairperson Shahrir Samad should account for RM11.4 billion, instead of just the RM4.3 billion from the Felda Global Venture's (FGV) listing, said PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli.

Looking ahead

Today the Appellate Court will hear the Sisters in Islam appeal of the High Court judgment on 24 June 2016, which decided that the High Court does not have jurisdiction to hear the NGO's challenge against a Selangor fatwa declaring it as a deviant group.
