Guan Eng sneers at BN for failing to develop Labuan

Since the BN has failed to keep its promises to Labuan, which was declared a federal territory in 1984, can it be trusted to keep its words to develop Penang if it is made a federal territory?

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng raised this matter today, when referring to Umno Kalabakan MP Abdul Ghapur Salleh, who questioned Putrajaya about the development in Labuan,.

Lim said Ghapur himself questioned BN, in Parliament yesterday, on why even many years after it was made a federal territory, there is a lack of development in Labuan.

“Ghapur (photo) himself said there were many promises of development from BN, that they promised the moon and stars but until now, the promises were unfulfilled,” Lim told reporters at a press conference.

“That is the danger of this state becoming a federal territory. Our whole future will be put at risk,” added Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general.

“If BN cannot even keep its promises to a BN state like Labuan, we cannot trust it to bring development to Penang if we become a federal territory.”

Labuan, an island off the Sabah coast, became a federal territory on April 16, 1984.

Lim was referring to the controversial proposal Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor made on Feb 1, where he expressed his wish to federalise parts of Penang, Langkawi and Malacca.

Tengku Adnan’s suggestion, made during an interview with business radio BFM 89.9, kicked up a storm in Penang, with Lim challenging him to a debate, which did not materialise.

Pakatan Harapan and BN remained opposed to the idea, which has since fizzled out. Tengku Adnan had earlier justified it by saying the plan was to help all races, especially "neglected Malays", and to provide more affordable housing in Penang.

Lim then expressed gratitude to the 10,000 people who turned up at Beach Street last Sunday to participate in the “I Love Penang” run to oppose any attempt to federalise the state.

He said a similar run would be held in Butterworth on Sunday, and is expected to involve at least 5,000 participants.

The event is part of the “I Love Penang’ campaign that included a just-concluded logo competition, which was launched by the state government after Tengku Adnan’s proposal created waves of displeasure among Penangites.
