YOURSAY | ‘Unfortunately, he has fallen into the government's trap of disqualifying him.'

Tian Chua guilty of 'insulting cop's modesty', MP seat at stake

Peacemaker: Batu MP Tian Chua insulted the woman police officer by calling her "good for nothing"? Even speaking the truth amounts to outraging her modesty?

She must be a mighty modest female to be so easily outraged. Seriously, what did Tian Chua do? Did he touch her, make an indecent proposal to her or just told her to stop wasting her time and go home?

Wong Fei Hoong: This case should be classified as having used abusive language or verbal abuse and not insulting a cop's modesty. Indeed, did Tian Chua touch her or force himself on her?

Hang Babeuf: "Insulting the modesty" of a woman does not normally include, or extend to, verbal comment.

It is conventionally about tearing off some of her clothing, or tearing off some of your own to "expose yourself" to her, to embarrass or with the aim of personally humiliating her.

Here it's only words. This is a ridiculous judgment. "Beyond a reasonable doubt"? Only for unreasonable forms of reasoning. Malaysian "dungu-legalism" is in action once again.

Justice Fairness: Before the Harapan supporters say the decision is unfair, let me remind them of other similar cases.

For example, there was a case in 2015 where two persons insulted a female Penang council enforcement officer by calling her a dog, throwing the RM50 fine payment on the floor.

In November 2015, one of them was sentenced to a RM5,200 fine and three days’ jail.

Worldly Wise: Chua should have been charged under the Minor Offences Act. Whatever a police officer does, he must be addressed politely by an MP.

Swear words are taboo even against the MP's deadliest enemies. MP Tian Chua is usually very polite. What happened?

Anonymous 2447961480069542: Chua, the police personnel at which you swore may well be 'stupid' and an instrument of oppression, but being an educated person, you should have restrained yourself. It is perhaps understandable when uttered in a moment of anger.

Now you have fallen into the government's trap of disqualifying you, with the 'help' of the police and the judiciary.

You are not Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos, the untouchable henchman. Other opposition MPs should take note.

Analliar: You know they will get you with or without justification, so why expose yourself and do their work by giving them reason to kick you out?

Hornbill: Tian Chua is useless to the electorate if jailed and fined more than RM2,000. How can he serve the people if he's in jail; he will be disqualified as MP for five years.

It is a risk a politician takes when uttering politically charged words. It would be good for future budding politicians trying to oust the BN to be more in control of their speech or actions, so as not to land themselves in jail or be fined in excess of RM2,000.

Anonymous #01428088: Perhaps it would take 20 years for the Court of Appeal to hear Chua's case.

Drngsc: The 14th general election (GE14) is coming soon. Take down one Tian Chua, five more would arise.

Indeed, the authorities outrage our intelligence every day.

CCH: By the time GE14 is announced, only Tan Ah Kow would be left to contest under Harapan's ticket. Who is Tan Ah Kow? My point exactly.

Those earning RM12k also applied for BR1M, says minister

Well Thats Fantastic: Are those 600,000 rich Malaysians who applied for BR1M paying the correct income tax?

If they think they don't have enough money and deserve BR1M, I'm certain they would think they shouldn't have to pay so much tax.

Tax avoidance makes the tax rate higher, and they make those who pay cover those that don't.

Hank Marvin: What is RM12,000 a month for someone with 10 kids and who lives in Kuala Lumpur? And these guys are not Umno ministers who have it good.

Anonymous 2447961480069542: They are throwing money like confetti when the Treasury is almost empty just to 'bribe' voters. This is not in the nation's interest. There are many other ways to help the disadvantaged in society.

This is cheap and lousy public policy worthy only of the incompetent.

Clever Voter: BR1M makes BN government feel like they are charitable and generous. But it is undignified and a waste of taxpayers' money.

Build capacity, make citizens take pride in earning their own money, and get employers to pay more.

By all means, help the hardcore poor. Stop taking bribes, remove wastage and reduce taxes, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

All of these would gain you friends and possibly votes.

Fair Play: The tragic truth is that after more than 50 years at the helm, the government of the day has turned the rakyat into a handicapped society needing handouts and more handouts.

Just imagine, even very rich Malaysians from certain communities are entitled to such privileges because of their special position.

Ronald: You can't blame the 600,000 applicants. After all, who does not want free money, especially from the government?
