MCMC blocked 3,110 websites from 2016 till January this year

From 2016 until January this year, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) blocked 3,110 websites for various offences, including publishing content that could jeopardise public order.

According to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry, of this number, 2,837 websites which had pornographic, disgusting, false and threatening content were blocked under the provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"Other websites were for gambling, prostitution, cheating, piracy, unregistered medicines and false products," the ministry said in a written reply to Ikmal Hisham Abdul Azizi (BN-Tanah Merah) in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Ikmal had asked the ministry to state the number of websites that had been blocked because they threatened public order.

The ministry also said all these websites were blocked upon the request of and with the authority of enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry as well as the Health Ministry.

In a separate written reply to Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam), the ministry also said the MCMC had investigated 167 cases of Internet and social media abuse under the same Act.
