The People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) have set up a task force to implement short and long term measures to improve the management of firearms following the case of its missing firearms in Selama, Perak.

Rela, in its statement today, said the task force comprised officers from various agencies whose roles among others, would be to review all directives including the management manuals of existing firearms.

It has also undertaken a thorough examination of the firearms, improving firearms storage, upgrading the skills of Rela personnel in the management of weapons and examining the need for additional posts to manage all matters relating to firearms, he said.

The team also set up an inspection team consisting of Rela officers at headquarters, state Rela and the Malaysian Rela Training Centre, he said.

"The short- and long-term improvement measures are expected to be able to boost the management of Rela firearms, "he said.

Rela said it would give full cooperation to the police in the case of the missing firearms.

"Rela Malaysia will not compromise with any party involved and supports the action taken against them," he said.

Police had confirmed that 26 guns owned by Rela had gone missing since early this month after a check was made.

Earlier media reports said 12 individuals, aged between 40 and 60 years, were arrested in the north of the peninsula, including members of Rela suspected to be involved in the sale of its firearms.
