No debate on Hadi's motion; Rafizi predicts polls before July 24

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

No debate on Hadi's motion

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's motion on proposed amendments to the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 was the sole agenda after questions time at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Abdul Hadi read his speech while Kota Baru MP Takiyuddin Hassan delivered a lengthy secondment speech, followed by the passing of a motion to postpone the debate before the sitting adjourned.

While the affair led to PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan shedding tears of joy, other opposition lawmakers were livid.

They had expected a debate and not leave this contentious issue hanging. They also accused the Dewan Rakyat speaker of facilitating Umno and PAS' "political theatre".

Rafizi's prediction for GE14 date

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli believed that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would have to call elections before the next Dewan Rakyat sitting.

This, said the lawmaker, was to avoid fissures in BN as most component parties disagree with the amendments to the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Bill 1965.

Rafizi also made a startling claim that "someone close to PAS" had received funds that originated from 1MDB.

Other Kinibites

The much anticipated legislative amendments to the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976, to prevent a spouse from converting their child's religion without their partner's consent, has been postponed.

It was initially slated for debate during this Dewan Rakyat sitting but Putrajaya decided at the last minute that it needed to be tweaked.

Meanwhile, the mystery over the viral photos of buried frozen chicken wings in Sibu has been solved.

It turns out eight containers of chicken wings had been buried by the Customs Department over unpaid taxes, among other reasons.

Looking ahead

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be speaker at an event called 'Hardtalk Ganti Debat' tonight at the Selangor Youth and Culture Complex, Shah Alam.

Other speakers include former PAS vice-president Husam Musa and Batu Burok state assemblyperson Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi.
