Cops detain woman for 'insulting' Johor sultan

A woman was detained last night after uploading an allegedly offensive statement against the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, and the Johor royal institution on Facebook.

Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said they received a report on the incident at about 12.30pm on April 9.

"Acting on the report, an investigation paper was opened to carry out further investigation and trace the individual believed to have uploaded the offensive statement.

"As a result, at 11.30pm last night, police detained a 48-year-old woman in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur who is believed to be the individual responsible for uploading the offensive statement," he said in a statement in Johor Baru today.

He said the businesswoman was now being remanded until April 14 to assist investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said the Johor police would never compromise and would take stern action against anyone found to have abused the social website by issuing false statements, offending, abusing, threatening and disturbing others.
