Rafizi names recipient of SRC-linked funds; making sense of the 'Hisham move'

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Rafizi names recipient of SRC-linked funds

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli named former PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa as the man who allegedly received funds linked to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1MDB.

Rafizi claimed this was based on information from a retired senior officer of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) who was involved in the 1MDB probe.

Following the revelation, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man distanced his party from Nasharudin, stating that PAS had not received any contributions from him.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan also said that the allegations involving its former party no 2 had nothing to do with PAS.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz said PAS too , had a lot of information but would not reveal them without sufficient evidence.

Making sense of the 'Hisham move'

Umno grassroots believe Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's move to enhance Hishammuddin Hussein's role in the government was aimed to boost his cousin's weak position rather than trying to undermine Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Analysts also believe that Najib was unlikely to move against the highly-popular Ahmad Zahid, as it would wreak havoc on Umno.

Umno sources indicate that Hishammuddin was trailing behind potential vice-presidential contenders such as Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Khairy Jamaluddin in the Umno elections, which is expected to take place after the general election.

A pro-Umno portal speculated that Hishammuddin's appointment may be Najib's message to younger contenders who plan to challenge Hishammuddin's position.

However, former minister Zainuddin Maidin believes the move was to prop up Hishammuddin, insisting that Najib would not allow Ahmad Zahid to become prime minister.
