Several to be charged soon in Johor corruption case

Several individuals are expected to be charged in connection with an alleged corruption and embezzlement of property case in Johor soon, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (Operations) deputy commissioner Azam Baki said today.

In confirming the case, Azam said MACC and the deputy public prosecutor were in the process of streamlining some elements of the investigation.

"I will not disclose the names of these individuals. Suffice to say that those who will be charged are among those who have been arrested pertaining to the case," he said.

Azam said this to reporters after attending a joint operation meeting with MACC Investigations director Simi Abd Ghani and Johor MACC director Azmi Alias.

Azam also dismissed speculations that some dignitaries (VIP) would be prosecuted.

"Don't make speculations that some dignitaries (VIP) are involved and so on. None but (those to be charged) are among those who have been arrested.

"There is a possibility the accused will be brought to court again with their associates to be charged jointly," he said.

Early today state executive councillor Abd Latiff Bandi and a property consultant were charged in the Sessions Court in Johor Baru on 33 counts of bribery worth RM30.3 million.

The accused, 51, along with Amir Shariffuddin Abd Raub, 44, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out before judge Mohd Fauzi Mohd Nasir.

Besides Abd Latif and Amir Shariffuddin, MACC had arrested six individuals, including Abd Latif's son, Abd Latif's special aide, a member of the public, two developers and a lawyer to facilitate investigations into the case.

Azam also thanked the Johor government for its excellent cooperation throughout the investigation of the case.
