Asri apologises to Hindus who misunderstood; IPIC-1MDB settlement

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Asri apologises to Hindus who misunderstood

Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin apologised to "Hindus who misunderstood his poem", which he said was to criticise the Indian administration under Narendra Modi, and not Hindus in Malaysia.

He posted a news article on violence against Muslims in India on a dispute over the consumption of beef to justify his poem, which criticised the caste system, deitified cows and the now-defunct practice of widow torching.

Asri also urged non-Muslims to find independent sources of information before judging Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, and not rely on "extremist group" Hindraf, which he said drives a wedge between Muslims and Hindus in Malaysia.

IPIC-1MDB settlement

1MDB and Abu Dhabi's International Petroleum Investment Corporation (IPIC) reached a settlement via arbitration, in which 1MDB agreed to pay IPIC US$1.2 billion in two tranches of equal amounts in July and December this year.

1MDB said it would monetise its "investment fund units" to pay IPIC, and has already paid US$50 million in cash.

The firms will continue to negotiate over payments made by 1MDB to "certain parties", which were not detailed but is believed to be referring to 1MDB's transfer of US$3.5 billion to a British Virgin Island-registered firm, which IPIC said is not linked to it.

1MDB said it would assume all future interest and principal payments for the US$3.5 billion bonds it issued in 2012 to buy energy assets. The bonds were guaranteed by IPIC.
