Warisan wants Kaamatan declared a national holiday

The Kaamatan festival, celebrated by the Kadazandusun Murut community in Sabah, should be a national public holiday, said Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal.

A two-day holiday should be declared for May 30 and 31 so Malaysians can travel to Sabah to join the celebrations and as a sign of respect from the federal government, he said in a statement.

Shafie, who is former rural and regional minister, said Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking had also raised this issue in Parliament when Leiking was in PKR.

“I was in Umno at the time, and I had heard him (speak about this matter) but it is only in the past few days that I realised why Kaamatan should be given due respect by the federal government,” he said.

He said the public holiday should also honour past leaders from the Kadazandusun Murut community who had led the nation.

"These past leaders had ensured that Sabah was not used by Malaya through the various negotiations and by enacting terms and conditions which are now the backbone of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 - an agreement we continue to strive to uphold today...
