Two dead, seven wounded in suspected racism shooting in US

Two people were killed and seven wounded on Sunday evening in a suspected racism shooting at an apartment complex in San Diego, 200km south from Los Angeles, ABC News reported, according to China's Xinhua news agency.

The two people killed included the suspected shooter and several of the victims wounded were in critical condition as a result of the attack at 6pm local time, according to the police.

A witness said he heard the gunfire and saw the shooter "sitting, drinking a beer in one hand with a gun out in the other" in the pool area of the apartment complex in San Diego, California.

The shooter, described as a white male armed with a gun, was fatally shot by three police officers who arrived at the scene, said San Diego police chief Shelley Zimmerman.

It is not immediately known if the suspect was a resident of the apartment complex. The reason for the mass shooting remains unclear.

Zimmerman said that the gunman walked into the pool area of the complex in the University City of San Diego, where a birthday party for a boy was held, and started shooting people at the scene with a beer in his hand.

Police spotted the gunman immediately and engaged with him.

"The suspect pointed the gun at our officers and three of our officers fired on the suspect and the suspect went down and the suspect is deceased," Zimmerman said at a press conference there hours later.

The victims, one of whom passed away later, were all described as seriously wounded and have been transported to hospitals.

Rielle Creighton, reporter of San Diego's local ABC 10 News, hinted in a tweet that the shooter was a white supremacist, saying that there were four to six African Americans at the pool when the white man walked in and started shooting.

Zimmerman refused to confirm the rumor, but she identified the gunman as Peter Selis, a 49-years-old white man.
