Star front-page turns into criminal case

Five editors and a photographer from The Star were questioned by police over the daily's front-page last Saturday which put a story about a terrorist above a picture of Muslims in prayers.

The Institute of Journalist called on authorities to cease the criminal probe and instead allow The Star to resolve the issue internally. The police are investigating the daily under the Sedition Act for allegedly inciting religious enmity.

Meanwhile, MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong, whose party owns The Star, said the English daily had no intention to portray Muslims as terrorists but the media needed to exercise greater sensitivity.

Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Youth deputy chief Faiz Fadzil said Muslims should let go of the mistake as Islam advocates compassion and forgiveness.

MP courts Selangor sultan’s wrath

Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, through his private secretary Munir Bani, reportedly instructed action to be taken against a mosque in Subang for allowing Subang MP R Sivarasa to speak there.

Sivarasa denied giving a political speech, stating that he will write to the monarch to explain that he was merely there to hand out aid and briefly conveyed his Ramadan greetings.

Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar said the incident should serve as a lesson to all and that even he did not campaign at places of worship.

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali said he met the sultan over the incident and urged leaders to abide by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department guidelines on organising events at mosques and surau.

Security scare on MAS flight

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH128 was forced to return to Melbourne Airport minutes after a passenger tried to enter the cockpit. He was arrested on arrival.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in a dialogue session stressed that the civil service must reject mediocrity.
