The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into alleged corruption associated with illegal gambling in Malacca has had a major impact because such activity has been wiped out, the state legislative assembly was told today.

Chief Minister Idris Haron said that in the wake of the MACC action, raids conducted by local authorities showed that illegal gambling premises no longer operated in the "hot spot" areas.

“I am convinced that the MACC action has had an impact. Reports show that the illegal gambling operators have closed up, not only in Malacca but also other states.

“When we visit such locations, these places are so desolate,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Lim Jak Wong (Independent-Bachang) who had wanted to know the subsequent government action following the wiping out of the illegal gambling dens.

Idris said the MACC action showed that the federal and state governments were serious in addressing the issue of illegal gambling.

Replying to the original question from Lim, the chief minister said the police conducted 108 raids in the first four months of this year and made 108 arrests and seized 1,034 computer units.
