Putrajaya intervenes in FGV crisis; ex-IGP defends Najib on RM9.5m payment

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Putrajaya intervenes in FGV crisis

Former minister Idris Jala was appointed as an external party to establish the facts and recommend solutions to the crisis plaguing Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV).

The crisis was triggered after the FGV board led by its chairperson Mohd Isa Abdul Samad ordered the company's CEO Zakaria Arshad to go on leave on grounds that he violated corporate governance rules - but Zakaria claimed he had tried to stop "ridiculous" investment decisions by the board.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said Isa must come clean on whether Zakaria's allegation is true.

Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zakarshi, who leads the government's propaganda arm, said both Mohd Isa and Zakaria should go as it was no longer tenable for them to work with each other.

Zakaria was grilled by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for four hours following the FGV's board decision.

Zakaria, in an interview, urged the shareholders of FGV - including Felda, which holds a 34 percent stake - to make a choice between him and Mohd Isa.

Ex-IGP defends Najib

Former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan rubbished allegations that the Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak paid millions of ringgit out of his personal bank accounts to a prosecutor in Anwar Ibrahim's case, claiming that Najib closed his bank account in 2013 but the payment allegedly took place in 2014.

However, the special task force which investigated fund flows into the prime minister's bank accounts had previously said Najib had two accounts, the second of which was closed on March 9, 2015.

Anwar's lawyers are expected to file a legal challenge tomorrow (Friday) on the alleged RM9.5 million payment from Najib to his prosecutor Shafee Abdullah.

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar insisted that the idea of jailed Anwar becoming prime minister was not far-fetched despite the scepticism of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu)

Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad reiterated his reluctant willingness to act as prime minister candidate for the opposition coalition, but only for "a short while".

BN and DAP reps fighting for survival

BN's Mat Yusoff Ab Ghani insisted that he is still the Nenggiri elected representative despite Kelantan state assembly speaker Abdulah Ya'kub declaring the seat vacant due to Mat Yusoff's bankruptcy.
