Nancy dodges Shafee poser; No bonus for Felda rebels

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Nancy dodges poser on Shafee's payment

Former de facto law minister Nancy Shukri maintained that senior lawyer Shafee Abdullah was officially paid RM1,000 for his role in the Sodomy II case, but could not comment on another alleged RM9.5 million payment, citing the fact that she was not privy to arrangements made by the Attorney-General's Chambers.

Former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan insisted that there was a hidden agenda behind allegations that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak paid RM9.5 million to Shafee.

Felda observers are split on whether the Felda Global Ventures Holdings Berhad (FGV) crisis involving its embattled CEO Zakaria Arshad is a manifestation of a proxy war between different political camps.

Kiniguide gave an overview of the FGV crisis, including the key characters involved and its impact on Felda.

No bonus for Felda rebels

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said that those who had sued Felda or refused to sell produce to it were not entitled to a RM 500 Hari Raya bonus granted to Felda settlers.

Najib also addressed the FGV crisis, emphasising the need for a resolution before Hari Raya and promising better days ahead.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said claims that FGV engaged in "ridiculous investments" constituted grounds to suspend FGV chairperson Mohd Isa Abdul Samad.

However, FGV denied its CEO’s claims that the company had engaged in such investments.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which is investigating Zakaria's alleged violation of corporate governance rules, said it is also looking at Zakaria's claims against the FGV board.

Activists nabbed

An Invoke volunteer who helped PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli track down the director of a firm which allegedly engaged a US lobbyist for the Malaysian government was arrested by police.

Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Youth vice-chief Shazni Munir was remanded for four days, reportedly over his protest at the Election Commission (EC) last month.

Other Kinibites

Police arrested a MACC officer for allegedly blackmailing one of its officers and demanding a monthly bribe of RM3,000.

Lawyers say it is not unusual for chief justice Md Raus Sharif to expedite cases of public importance, but stressed that lawyers involved in challenging the EC's redelineation exercises should be given adequate time to prepare.

Selangor Islamic Religious Department concluded its probe into Subang MP R Sivarasa's speech at Masjid An-Nur Kampung Melayu Subang, and will announce its action against the mosque committee after Ramadan.

A lookalike of the prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor made an appearance at the launch of Zunar's latest cartoon collection in Penang.

Sarawak called on Putrajaya to defer the planned Tourism Tax in East Malaysia.

Looking ahead

Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz will be attending the Iftar@KL buka puasa function at Dataran Merdeka.
