Lawyer challenges police and MACC to reopen files on 1MDB

A lawyer today challenged inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad to reopen investigations into 1MDB, following the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) filing against the state fund last week.

Haniff Khatri Abdulla also urged attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali to seek the cooperation from the DOJ, as well as his American counterpart, to gather evidence in order to help the police and MACC complete their respective probes against 1MDB and its former subsidiary, SRC International Sdn Bhd, by July 31.

Apandi, Haniff further said, should also appoint a special team of prosecutors headed by a senior deputy public prosecutor (DPP) or a senior lawyer, among the 18,000 lawyers registered with the Malaysian Bar, to independently evaluate the investigation papers, and he (Apandi) himself should not be heading the team, or decide on the results of the police and MACC probes as "he is clearly conflicted, when he acted as if he is Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal lawyer."...
