Another bank punished over 1MDB

The Luxembourg Financial Sector Supervisory Commission fined the Edmond de Rothschild private bank EUR8.985 million (RM43 million) for its lapses in preventing the laundering of 1MDB funds.

The National Registration Department (NRD) said it will look into claims by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) that Penang-born billionaire Jho Low has dual citizenship, which violates the federal constitution.

The US Embassy denied Umno's claim that it was out to topple the Malaysian government through its civil forfeiture suits on the 1MDB scandal.

DAP's Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua questioned the ruling coalition disparaging the DOJ's suit, but refusing to address the truth of the claims made in the suit.

Lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdullah, who had acted for former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, challenged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to reopen the investigation into 1MDB.

Call for RCI on 1MDB too

PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the government should also set up a royal commission of inquiry for the 1MDB scandal after it decided to do so for the forex (foreign exchange) scandal to prove that the move is sincere and not politically motivated.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said Putrajaya cannot expect a pat on the back for setting up an RCI on the forex scandal more than 20 years after it happened.

Bank Negara Malaysia said it will cooperate with the RCI, stressing that it was important to maintain the central bank's integrity.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he does not rule out an emergency declaration if the BN loses power.

He also claimed that the ruling coalition was offering Bersatu Youth leaders up to RM50,000 to ditch the party.

Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said there was a silver lining in the betrayal of certain wing leaders as it would ensure the party was free of those who can be easily bought over.

Sex crimes

A 37-year-old businessman faces up to 30 years in jail and whipping after he was charged with allegedly inserting his finger into the vagina of a 26-year-old woman last month.

An Australian court sentenced Malaysian pilot Alfred Gerard Eravelly to 13 years in prison for rape, 21 years after the crime was committed. He was arrested when he tried to visit Australia last year.

Former Universiti Malaya (UM) vice chancellor Ghauth Jasmon said he found it strange that the university would ask an international exchange student to retract his police report after he was sexually assaulted on campus.

The Universiti Malaya Academic Staff Association expressed concern that the university's procedures for dealing with sexual harassment cases have not been strictly adhered to and urged compliance.

PKR vice-president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was adamant that the opposition win the general election before deciding on a prime minister candidate.

The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court dismissed Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos' suit against the Selangor government for shutting down his resort which was built without a licence.

Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd chairperson Zarul Ahmad Zulkifly denied federal minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan's claim that the Penang government overpaid the company for feasibility studies, but said he will not sue as an Umno member does not sue another Umno member.

The Social Security Organisation (Socso) gave the family of T Nhaveen RM2,000 to help with funeral arrangements. Nhaveen, a bully victim, died of his injuries at Penang hospital last week.

Sarawak will implement the tourism tax despite an earlier tiff with Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz who berated the state's minister for proposing a deferment.
