vox populi big thumbnail ‘Most Malaysians are aware that you, Pak Lah, might have 'cooked' up a deal with Najib on this so-called transition of power so it is with regret we inform you that we are not buying your story.'

On Have faith in Najib, ignore Altantuya allegations: PM

Timo Finian: Ignore Altantuya allegations, my foot. Sorry Mr PM sir, not unless the PI Bala issue is sorted out.

Most Malaysians are aware that you might have 'cooked' a deal with Najib on this so-called transition of power so it is with regret we inform you that Malaysians are not buying your story.

Sorry, the PM's mantle is not going to be handed to your successor on a silver platter. He has to fight tooth and nail for it if Malaysians are going to have a say in this.

Lim Keat Hoe: It is not a question of having faith in Najib but what are the facts of the case, Mr PM? The allegations came complete with dates and times.

It is a simple matter isn't it if Najib wants to refute these allegations of interference with the Altantuya murder trial.

Statutory declarations seem to be the in thing but he can very well provide irrefutable evidence that he had not been in touch with the said lawyer, Shafee.

Nah! why bother? The PM believes in him and in our rotten political system and that is what is important. By the way, isn't Najib the PM in-the-waiting?"

Tyongly: Are our Malaysian leaders above the law? Have faith in Najib, ignore Altantuya allegations?

This statement made by the PM shows that he, too, is not a trustworthy leader. How can he hide from such allegations surrounding of his successor?

How can he ever endorse one who has been consistently alleged to be involved in scandals and has yet to clear his name?

Our courts cannot be trusted too. For two years now, they have been beating around the bush of the Altantuya murder trial.

We are heading for disaster.

On Altantuya-Najib allegations resurface

Alfred Ho : I read with horror with regards to the exchange of text messages between Najib and the lawyer Shafee Abdullah pertaining to the Altantuya murder.

I caution all right-thinking Malaysians not to rejoice at PM Abdullah's exit from the top post as I am quite certain that he is going to have the last laugh on all of us. I am sure he knows only too well what is in store for us in the future when Najib assumes power.

Furthermore, it has been speculated that ex-premier Mahathir will become Najib's adviser

which certainly spells disaster for all Malaysians. How can all law-abiding citizens allow such a person as Najib to be our next prime minister when he has been tainted and linked to several scandals?

May I take this opportunity to remind all Malaysians who seek justice to remember our beloved hero, Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who is now languishing in jail for exposing the corrupt practices of this very despotic regime.

I attended a candlelight vigil to try and pressure the evil government to release RPK and unconditionally and without delay for he is certainly the voice and conscience of the nation and we should be proud of the sacrifices that he is making for all of us with the hope that we can have better leaders in the not too distant future.

Teo Thian Eng: I have a question that no one can answer, except private investigator P Balasubramaiam himself. Ever since he had made a correction to his SD, Bala and his family went missing.

The curious part is that our home minister said it was not the duty of the police duty to look for Bala. But don't tell me the police are not going to take any action against Bala for making a false declaration or it is alright just to amend and apologise for a wrong declaration?

In the first place, at least, the Malaysian police must investigate why he had made such allegation involving the DPM. Could he have beeen instigated by someone, say Anwar?

What was the motive or main agenda for making such serious allegation if he had no good reason or proof? If Bala does not step forward and prove that he is not dead, I have to make myself believe that Bala and his family are all dead, most probably bombed with C4 explosives in some jungle in Malaysia.

On BN mulls new multi-racial group

Leo: Ahmad Shabery's statement that a single party BN open to direct entry is tantamount to dissolving Umno is an example of the kind of narrow-minded, alarmist thinking which declares to the world that Umno is a party full of backwoods type stuck in a time warp.

The fact that it comes from one of Umno's younger leaders and purportedly one with an education, is liable to make people lose all hope in Umno. Is Umno membership a dumbing down process?

Before Shabery puts on the amateur dramatics about the move being ‘a cruel blow to Umno', he might want to ponder a moment if it is really impossible for Umno to co-exist with a BN that can admit members directly.

The prime minister seems to be unaware of this problem. He, too, suggests that BN might admit members directly. Though much older than Ahmad Shabery, the prime minister shows greater flexibility of mind in considering new ways for Umno to be relevant.

Shabery should think a little first before he makes a fool of himself again as he did in the debate with Anwar Ibrahim. Young leaders with narrow minds like Shabery might be the real ‘cruel blow' to Umno.

JD Lovrenciear:

It appears that the mantra of the BN party bigwigs these days is ‘we need to re-brand'. And therein lies their own folly.

Re-branding demands more than mere rhetoric to begin with. It categorically needs to witness leadership change at the helm if the parties within the ruling coalition are to see any daybreak in their current dismal days.

Secondly, to successfully re-brand, you need a total overhaul of your image and reputation. And to do so, you cannot merely whitewash your facade and hope all things will fall into place.

One needs to understand that fundamentals must be in place before any change for the better can take place from the outside.

These fundamentals relate with what the populace are persistent about. This is also concurrent with ratings and findings by global organisations that are committed to bench-marking corruption, authoritarianism, transparency and justice for the man-in-the-street.

Our vintage politicians and patronizing political-wannabees must recognize that experience garnered through long years of persistently staying at the political helm is not a qualification for leadership.

Leadership in this new age is bench-marked by charismatic and innovative abilities to change and thrive on chaos. The age and times of warlords and brutal power are long gone.

Little English:

In addition, don't forget that if he is elected, we will have to hire an English tutor to teach him the English Language.

Fatima: After reading the various comments here, I agree wholeheartedly that we should have a new set of leaders who can lead and serve the country properly (the present proposed leaders are certainly not fit to lead the country).

We should have leaders who can lead by the examples of their lives eg, good moral background, are just and honest and can serve humbly - not those who want power and need to control others or those who are stained by immorality, corruption and even murder.

We also need leaders who know how to unite all the races into one and to treat all equally.

On Gerakan seeks to be a louder conscience for BN

Kamen: Yeah, right! Say only! We have had enough of the party's lip service.

If they were truly conscientious, please ask Koh Tsu Koon to do ‘a Zaid Ibrahim' and quit BN.

All talk only about how the ISA is inhumane and such. All abang adik doing sandiwara .

On Satu bangsa satu negara?

Anonymous: Racial integration programmes are definitely not necessary in our country. Does Singapore need racial integration programmes or have they ever ran such programmes? The Malays, Chineses and Indians are living in unity in Singapore.

So racial integration programmes are utterly nonsense.. All the Malaysian so-called government has got to do is start treating everyone the same. When this is accomplished, racial integration will automatically be achieved and all quaters will be living happily ever after..

It has been more then 50 years since we got independence. Never once has BN talked about racial integration. BN never bothered about racial integration. I tell you the truth - BN will not talk about racial integration if they had won a 90% majority in the election.

Here is what will happen in the name of ‘racial integration'. Some Umno supreme council member will make millions by executing such programmes for the BN government, period.

I hope and urge all Malaysians to support racial integration by treating everyone the same and treating everyone as fellow human beings.

On Outcry over Datukship for Bollywood heartthrob

A Reez:

I am appalled that Shah Rukh Khan has been conferred a Datukship. Not that I have anything against Shah Rukh Khan as some of my friends would not miss a movie if he is starring in it. He received the Datukship because of a small role where Melaka was highlighted.

But then how about other actors and actresses especially from Hollywood that have promoted

Malaysia in their movies? If the reason is millions of moviegoers around the world got to know Malacca from this movie then how about ‘Entrapment' the movie?

Entrapment promoted Kuala Lumpur especially Kuala Lumpur's iconic landmark the Petronas Twin Towers throughout the whole movie. Its leading stars were Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones.

Therefore I would like to recommend that Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones be conferred

Datukships as well for their role in promoting the Petronas Twin Towers in the movie ‘Entrapment'.

The movie is always referred to whenever foreigners who have never visited Kuala Lumpur wonder how the city looks like. There might be other actors or actresses that other readers might want to include to the list of recommended Datukships for their role in promoting Malaysia.

Maybe Sean Connery should get a Tan Sri as he has already received his nnighthood. I don't think Shah Rukh Khan is any where near Sir Sean!

I don't agree with individuals that have no attachment to Malaysia receiving titles from either the state or federal Government. It only should be conferred on Malaysians or selected non-Malaysian individuals that have contributed and sacrificed for Malaysia.

Toh SP: This is another unmeritorious decision by the government.

If the government thinks that artistes who have promoted Malaysian tourism deserved to be honoured then by analogy, Hong Kong actor Chow Yuen Fatt who featured in the ‘The King & I' and the numerous foreign artistes who performed in Genting's Arena of Stars should similarly be honoured for they, too, have played a part in promoting tourism to Malaysia.

On Black Friday for Asian bourses, KLCI down 3.6 pct

M: I take issue with Dr San Oo Aung San's comments that the US is somehow taking the medicine of the man who singlehandedly raised the cost of living in Malaysia.

Dr M devalued the ringgit from US$1=RM2.50 to US$1=RM3.80 during the 1997 fallout. Put simply, one ringgit was worth 40 US cents before Dr M as finance minister devalued it to RM1= 26 US cents - a devaluation of 35%.

This resulted in an immediate inflation of prices of all imports from cars to foodstuffs etc - a trend we see till this day. The recent G7 and EU 15 deals do not involve a devaluation simply because the rise in the cost of living would be not acceptable by the voters there and the governments would be voted out.

There was a cynical reason for our devaluation - our major commodity export was petroleum. Dr M had control of Petronas which only needs to report to the PM while all oil production is sold and denominated in US dollars.

So Petronas had more ringgit in its coffers after Dr M unilaterally re-pegged the ringgit from RM2.50 to RM3.80. The public in the meantime had to pick up the pieces in higher prices.

On Pemuda PAS: Gambar Anwar bukan patung

Abdul Rahman Shamsi:
