Launched on November 20th, 1999, Malaysiakini.com offers between 20 to 30 items of news, opinions, editorials, features and letters a day. Since its launch, the website become the leading source of independent news and views on Malaysia. It currently attracts over 50,000 visits a day and over three million page views a month.
Unlike the majority of the print and broadcast media, Malaysiakini is not owned by any political party, nor does it require annual licensing from the Home Minister. All editorial decisions are taken by Malaysiakini editors based on Malaysiakini's Editorial Policy.
With news, Malaysiakini aims to be the first to report on breaking news, as well as carry news items often neglected or censored by the mainstream media.
Malaysiakini's opinions, columns and features offer well-informed, diverse viewpoints, both on local and international issues. Our editorial position is consistently supportive of justice, human rights, democracy, freedom of speech and good governance.
Malaysiakini's Letters section has generated active participation from readers of all races and religions and of various ideological backgrounds, creating an open and well-informed arena of public debate unseen in Malaysia since the 1960s. Discussion on taboo subjects such as migrant workers, AIDS, Islam and racial quota systems has generated a new understanding on these issues.
Malaysiakini's letters section attracts both local and foreign writers. In the aftermath of September 11, Malaysiakini carried a healthy debate between American and Malaysian writers, putting forwards opinions of the event. A similar debate was sparked after the controversial speech by the former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohammad, at the Kuala Lumpur Organisation of Islamic Countries 2003 summit. In short, Malaysiakini acts as a bridge of world views, both domestically and internationally.
Malaysiakini is owned and operated by Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd.
