Fasting, and separating religious fact from fiction

I was listening to the radio station Mix FM on the morning of Aug 3, when the announcers were babbling away as usual. This time around, they actually caught my attention. One of the announcers said that Muslims are not supposed to dig their nose and ears while in a state of fast.

I sighed upon hearing the remark. If the announcer is a non-Muslim, I do not blame him at all. After all, he did say that he had been informed about this apparently "new knowledge" on fasting.

I blame all those Muslims around him who fed this erroneous information. This may be a petty issue, but it is misinformation all the same.

Nowhere in the books of fiqh or hadith has it been mentioned that picking one's nose or ears would render one’s fast invalid. This could just be a tale from one's primary school days, ignorance which is accepted as truth. What is not allowed is the use of nasal spray into one's nose, and that too without good medical reason to do so.

I hope Muslims will equip themselves with facts and knowledge about Islam before they feed their ignorance on non-Muslims. In this information age of Google , there is no excuse to be ignorant of almost anything.
