Some 200 protesters gathered at the Dataran Shah Alam in the Selangor capital today in nationwide protests against the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp).

NONE The group started gathering from 2.20pm, after the Friday prayers at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, some 600 metres away, and began chanting slogans, with the organisers making speeches under the hot sun.

The protest in Shah Alam was the epicentre of nationwide protests organised by Solidariti Hijau SeMalaysia - Stop Lynas, a coalition of 23 NGOs.

"Together, let's reject Lynas, and if the government is not willing to defend our country from Lynas' dangerous waste, we will change the government," Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad told the cheering crowd.

NONE Slogans displayed by the protesters included Green earth, Long live the people, Send Lynas back to Australia and Crush Lynas.

Among the others present were Asalkan Bukan Umno coordinator Haris Ibrahim, Hulu Klang assemblyperson Saari Sungib, SHS-SL spokesperson Zulkefly Mohamad Omar and Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia chairperson Mohd Safwan Anang.

About 30 police officers, including traffic policemen and about 10 Shah Alam City Council enforcement officers were present to direct traffic. They kept watch from across the road and did not interfere with the protest.

A few motorists on Persiaran Sultan blared their horns in support as they passed the square.

The protest end peacefully about 3pm.
